Cannabis Concentrates Explained

A cannabis concentrate is exactly what it sounds like: the plant's active compounds, concentrated into a potent form with most of the leaf and fiber stripped away. Instead of smoking whole flower, you are using a product that can be several times stronger by weight. Here is the map, so the dispensary menu stops looking like a foreign language.

The two families: solvent and solventless

Every concentrate falls into one of two camps based on how it is made.

Solventless concentrates use only physical force: heat, pressure, water or ice, and agitation. Rosin and traditional hash live here. Nothing chemical is added.

Solvent-based concentrates use a solvent such as butane or CO2 to strip the oils, which is then purged. Live resin, shatter, wax and distillate live here.

Neither family is automatically better. The quality of the starting plant and the skill of the maker matter far more than the category.

A quick glossary

  • Hash: the original concentrate, made by collecting and pressing the plant's resin glands.
  • Rosin: solventless, pressed with heat and pressure. See our full rosin guide.
  • Live resin: solvent-extracted from fresh-frozen plants, prized for aroma. See our live resin guide.
  • Shatter and wax: solvent extracts named for their texture, glassy or soft.
  • Distillate: highly refined, very high in THC, usually low in aroma, common in vape carts and edibles.

Why aroma is the dividing line

The difference you actually notice is terpenes, the aroma compounds that give each strain its smell and much of its character. Live, fresh-frozen products tend to keep more of them; heavily refined products like distillate keep fewer. If flavor is what you are after, follow the aroma. That is the same logic behind our terpene glossary and our Sip-and-Sniff pairings.

How to choose, and how to start

If you are new to concentrates, respect the potency. Start with a very small amount and wait. Ask a budtender what the product was made from and how, and let that guide you more than the name on the jar. On our Cannabis Dispensary Tour, seeing concentrates explained in person, next to the flower they came from, is one of the fastest ways to understand them.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Yes, often several times stronger by weight, which is why dosing small matters.

Solventless options like rosin and quality hash appeal to people who want nothing added, though well-made solvent extracts are purged of residual solvent.

A highly refined, very high-THC oil that is low in aroma, common in vape cartridges and edibles.

Honestly, flower or a low-dose edible is a gentler start. If you want to try a concentrate, go small with a flavorful rosin or live resin.

Fresh, terpene-rich concentrates do. Refined distillate usually does not.

The bottom line

Concentrates reward curiosity, as long as you treat the potency with respect. Learn whether a product is solvent or solventless, follow the aroma, and start small. Want it demystified in person? Reserve a tour and we will walk you through the whole shelf.
