How to Store Cannabis So It Does Not Go Bad

Cannabis does not last forever, but stored well it stays good for months. Stored badly, it dries out, loses aroma and potency, and can even grow mold. The fix is simple once you know the four things that degrade it: air, light, heat and the wrong humidity.

The four enemies

  • Air. Oxygen breaks down cannabinoids and dries out flower. Airtight is the goal.
  • Light. UV light degrades THC faster than almost anything. Keep it dark.
  • Heat. Warmth dries flower and can degrade its compounds. Cool is better.
  • Humidity. Too dry and it crumbles and harshens; too damp and it risks mold. The sweet spot is roughly 55 to 62 percent relative humidity.

The right setup

For flower, use an airtight glass jar, kept in a cool, dark cupboard. Glass beats plastic, which can hold static and affect aroma. A small two-way humidity pack inside the jar holds the humidity in that ideal band and is the single best upgrade most people can make.

Avoid the freezer. Freezing makes the delicate resin glands brittle, and they break off, taking aroma and potency with them. A cool cupboard beats the fridge or freezer for everyday storage.

How long it lasts

Properly stored flower keeps much of its quality for six months to a year, gradually fading after that. Edibles follow their printed expiration like any food. Concentrates are generally stable but still prefer cool and dark. Aroma is the tell: when a strain stops smelling like itself, its terpenes have faded, and so has a lot of what made it enjoyable. If terpenes interest you, our terpene glossary explains why aroma is the whole game.

A quick checklist

Airtight glass, cool cupboard, out of the light, humidity pack if you have one, and no freezer. Do that and your flower will taste the way it did the day you bought it.

Good to know

Frequently asked

It does not spoil like food overnight, but it loses aroma and potency over time and can grow mold if stored damp.

Neither for everyday use. A cool, dark cupboard is better. Freezing makes resin glands brittle and they break off.

Roughly 55 to 62 percent relative humidity, which a two-way humidity pack maintains.

Well stored, it keeps much of its quality for six months to a year.

Airtight glass. Plastic can affect aroma and hold static that pulls off trichomes.

The bottom line
